In a multifaceted political environment, the recent visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Canada turned out to be marred with controversy, sparking debates, apologies, and even a significant resignation. This episode has been a turning point for Canada-Ukraine relations and has fostered a discourse about historical cognizance and rectification of errors in the national and international arena.Â
Nature of President Zelenskyy's Visit:Â
President Zelenskyy's journey to Canada on September 22nd was primarily related to strengthen the bilateral ties between Ukraine and Canada and to discuss international cooperation and potential aid, revolving around security, economic growth, and democratic development, given the ongoing tensions and conflicts involving Ukraine. It was a symbol of united fronts, shared values against external pressures and most importantly a testament to Ukraine's appreciation of Canada’s unambiguous support. Â

The Unintended Honor to Hunka:Â
Â
However, the nobility of the visit was tainted when a former Nazi collaborator, Yuriy Hunka, was mistakenly honored. It was an inadvertent action, stemming from a lack of profound historical examination and awareness, leading to nationwide shame and international criticism. What essentially prompted the House Speaker Anthony Ronta to invite Yaroslav Hunka was due to his previous allegiance to his involvement in fighting against Russian aggression during WWII. However, notwithstanding the honor and courage which commands respect to all veterans, Hunka’s allegiance was more than simply opposing Russia’s despicable regime at the time; namely, it was directly seeking the persecution and genocide of Jewish people in Ukraine. Hunka admittedly served under the SS 14th Waffen Division which is a nazi military division however as the war progressed and the Axis powers were virtually defeated many soldiers forged fake identities in order to fly under the radar in the eyes of their welcoming countries. Hunka’s entire division was thus renamed from SS 14th Waffen Division to Ukraine’s First National Division which allowed his former military functions blurred, though it was certainly not forgotten.  Hunka's actions during World War II as a member of the Nazi regime had caused immense suffering and destruction, and his honor seemed to contrast sharply with the values the meeting intended to promote.Â
The Public ReactionÂ
The public’s response to the honoring of an ex-Nazi figure was swift and intense, with many expressing shock, dismay, and anger. People took to social media platforms, public forums, and street protests to voice their objections and concerns, demanding accountability and transparency from their elected representatives. The incident sparked intense discussions and debates, reflecting a deep sense of betrayal and a quest for moral justice among the citizens. Furthermore, while honoring a Nazi is always reprehensible, it was done on the eve of Yom Kippur an important holiday for the Jewish community, which is unquestionably adding insult to injury for a community which has ceaselessly faced oppression since the dawn of time, and still continue to battle against antisemitism.  Â
Strained Relations and Political FalloutÂ
The recognition has had significant repercussions on both domestic and international relations. The backlash has put pressure on MPs and the government, leading to calls for apologies and reparations. In a bipartisan fashion many MPs have come out and apologized for their misguided applaud during the address as they were not made aware of Hunka’s past, just merely presented as a hero which fought against Russian aggression in the past. Â
Honourable Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also made comments regarding the critical misstep which had occurred, but wanted to make sure that he had no prior knowledge of Hunka’s presence and his past military tasks, and highlights that the only person involved and aware of Hunka’s presence was Speaker of the House Anthony Rota. After the drastic backlash Anthony Rota announced his resignation for his lack of prudence and research prior to honoring Hunka in parliament. However, many have questioned the Prime Minister ignorance of Hunka’s presence in parliament given the Prime minister usually has a say in who would attend parliamentary hearings on an honorary basis, and even more so when in the presence of Ukraine's president which is also of Jewish decent. Admittedly, these are merely allegations and should remain as such until conclusive evidence can point to the contrary. Â

The incident has also strained Canada's diplomatic relations, impacting the nation's image abroad and potentially influencing future collaborations and negotiations. Polish Education Minister PrzemysÅ‚aw Czarnek has even gone as far as to demand the extradition of Hunka for the atrocities he has committed unto Jews, Poles, and Ukrainians during WWII. While the extradition process has not started, it may be an adequate step to reconcile the wrong which has been done in Canada’s solemn political institution. Â
Conclusive thoughtsÂ
The unintended honor to Yuriy Hunka during President Zelenskyy’s visit has sent shockwaves through the political, social, and international landscape of Canada. It has reopened painful chapters of history and brought to light the necessity of thorough scrutiny and conscientious acknowledgment of the past in our contemporary political processes.Â
This incident underlines the indispensable role of historical understanding and its meticulous application in today’s geopolitical context. It calls for a sustained and thoughtful approach to how we, as a society, engage with our collective past and how it is represented in our present actions and honors. The repercussions of this incident should serve as a stark reminder of the continuous need for vigilance, education, and reflection on historical events and personalities.Â
It is crucial for Canada, in moving forward, to deepen its commitment to historical truth and to fostering an environment where mistakes of this magnitude can be prevented. This involves not just institutional reforms but also societal awakening about the multi-dimensional aspects of history. Our approach to the past must be nuanced, balanced, and informed by a profound understanding of the complexities involved.Â
As we reflect on this incident and its wider implications, let us commit to fostering a world where the shadows of the past do not darken the prospects of the present and the future, and where the pursuit of truth and justice guides our path forward.Â
